Physician Opens Office in Centreville

Dr. Patricia A. Bowyer, a family practitioner, will open an office at Penn Station in Centreville on September 1. She is joining the practice of Patrick Shanahan, M.D. and Andrew Ferguson, M.D. and Dr. Bowyer will be a member of the Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital’s medical staff.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree at Johns Hopkins University and a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Bowyer completed a residency in family medicine at the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, and also earned a master’s degree in public health from the Emory School of Public Health in Atlanta.

Dr. Bowyer is especially interested in comprehensive family medicine - treating the entire family to help it develop an understanding of how working together can improve the health of all its members. She is a strong advocate of patient education that teaches patients how they can make small changes to have better health. Smoking cessation, weight reduction and pediatrics are three of her special interest areas.

While completing her residency, Dr. Bowyer worked as a resident physician at the Daytona International Speedway Urgent Care Center treating spectators, pit crew members and race car drivers. She completed a summer internship at the Betty Ford Substance Abuse Center in California where she observed several effective substance abuse programs.

Dr. Bowyer has been involved in her community by serving as a speaker for the American Business Women’s Association and working on several community projects. In 1997, she spent two weeks in the Dominican Republic as a volunteer with Medical Mission International treating people who rarely receive medical care.

Both Dr. Bowyer and her husband, Dave, are natives of New Jersey who met while they were students at Johns Hopkins University. They returned to this area to be closer to family and to enjoy the Bay and local rivers. She is a long distance runner and an avid reader.

Dr. Bowyer is now accepting appointments at (410) 758-3103.
